With research sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Office of Integrative Activities, Program on Convergence Acceleration (C-Accel), our team has started designing prototype applications to bring spatial decision support (SDS) information into an open knowledge network (OKN) environment. We are leveraging semantic web technologies that tag information objects and their relationships, allowing computers to do basic reasoning over distributed and heterogeneous data resources. These technologies make searches more effective, and help people more readily find, integrate, and synthesize knowledge resources. We are bridging the research-to-practice knowledge via user-centered design, while focusing on the domains of Water Quality, Wildland Fire, and Biodiversity Conservation, plus connections between/among the domains. This brief video and our project webpage explain more about the project.

We invite you to help us envision this future. Join us for a synchronous, online workshop on Wednesday, March 4, 2020 to help us articulate how we can create tools and services for SDS based on open knowledge networking. During the 3-hour workshop (10:00 am - 1:00 pm Pacific / 1:00 - 4:00 Eastern), we will share stories about the progress we’ve made and demonstrations of the prototype tools we have developed.

But more importantly, you’ll have a chance to share YOUR ideas and stories, your best practices and solutions, and the areas in your spatial decision workflow that cause you grief and angst. Your sharing, feedback, and suggestions will help us as we continue to envision, design, and plan for the ways in which these technologies could best fit the needs of the broader community. Following the workshop, we’ll be integrating what we hear from you into our C-Accel Phase 2 proposal, which will take our concepts and prototypes to the production level, as well as anticipate new tools and features.

Interested in participating in this national workshop? Please use the registration link below to register and tell us a little bit about yourself and your interests and activities related to spatial decision support and knowledge networks. We are looking to fill our virtual room with practitioners, researchers, students, and others who are representatives of research labs and professional communities who are curious to learn and to collaborate. Space is limited, so register as soon as possible.
